MAR 25, 2009 - Missed Opportunity

I have made up my own theme, again.

Sunday was my kid's piano recital. They sang and played piano. They were terrific, and they were absurdly cute in their little suits. I was so looking forward to photographing the recital. Unfortunately, my shots look TERRIBLE!! I did everything you can imagine wrong. First I started in Aperture Priority and the exposure was fine, but the shutter speed was too slow. Next I tried manual. Of course when I shortened the shutter speed the exposure was too dark, and lets not forget the unbelievable amount of noise. I wish that I would have done better. I processed the heck out of them to salvage something, but I'm no PSE expert either which explains the purple hair. These two shots are all I've been able to salvage, thus far.

  1. What handsome young men you have (and talented too)! Great shots and great memories!

  2. I love both shots. I do a lot of on stage photography for our high school. I use a fast lense and set it in manual (usually ~f2.8-3.2, shutter where it needs for stage lights) I shoot 800ISO and yes it has some noise but I don't mind.

  3. You've captured some memories here and that's ultimately what counts. I think the shots look good and the boys are adorable (unless they are too old to want to be adorable, in which case, substitute "handsome.")

  4. I thinks the shots look really nice, Linda. Don't sweat the small stuff - you were there to experience your boys' performance firsthand and that is what they will remember...

  5. Forgot to say, I really like this idea for a make your own theme...

  6. Maybe you only salvaged two, but they're both winners. The capture perfectly the intensity and concentration of these young performers.

  7. OOPS. I hope this doesn't repeat. I just started to comment and lost it.

You did a wonderful capture of their expressions as they performed. And I don't see purple hair in the smaller image. A selection around the hair would let you remove the purple in that selection without changing the rest of the image, which looks terrific to me.

  9. How confident they look! These photos of your adorable children are wonderful. I like your title for the theme too, but it seems like the opportunity wasn't fully missed!

  10. These photos are definitely worth treasuring! And, on the bright side, you get a look at things to come when your son, as a teenager, dyes his hair purple for real! ;-)

  11. They are so cute. You must be so proud of them. It's the memory of the recital that is important here not the quality of the photographs.

  12. They are so handsome, a fine reminder of the day. Good theme idea too, although I don't think you missed too much either.

  13. Great looking boys there and at least you've managed to have these 2 shots. Well done. Regardless, I'm sure the boys just loved having you present to see them.

  14. What you see as a missed opportunity, I see as two wonderful photos of talented kids. I especially like the one at the piano.
